Match Report: 60’s Stamford Strollers v Long Bennington (LB) Nations Cup
he 7 man squad for this game were:
Bill Whittle GK Steve Adcock Chris Keirl Tim Marsden Paul E Beard Jez Norris Jez Hammant
We always expected a close game and that is exactly what it proved to be between 2 very even sides.
Very few chances were made during a very close first half. Both defences performing well, with Stamford and LB having the odd half chance - both well saved by the keepers. The deadlock was finally broken when Steve Adcock received the ball with his back to the penalty area, spun past LB’s Sweeper and hit a low drive in to the corner of the net – a very classy goal. Half time 1-0 to Stamford.
In the 2nd half LB started to press further forward and played a higher tempo game seeking the equaliser. Both teams created a couple more half chances but no goals to show. Eventually with Stamford stretched in defence, an attack through the centre and a low shot got them their equaliser. Full time 1-1.
Extra time was played and still nothing to divide the teams. So penalties were called upon to decide the winners. Congrats to LB who came out 4-3 winners. The Gk’s managed to save 4 or 5 each and were both superb throughout the game.
A very competitive game and a chance for a beer and chat afterwards with the LB guys.
