Sunday June 28 Jan Barrett-Treen Memorial Cup Borderville

The Over 60s squad for the JBT Cup was:

  • Danny Tempest GK (on loan from Boston Utd)

  • Steve Kelly

  • Paul Archer

  • Alan Cook

  • Taff Lovesey

  • Jez Norris

  • Steve Bones

  • Tim Marsden Cap

Format for the day, 6 league games, top 4 qualify for the semi-finals.

Game 1 V Yaxley resulted in a tight competitive match between 2 sides who knew each other well. Danny Tempest in the Stamford goal, for the day, pulled off a great save to keep a clean sheet. Dave Moore in the Yaxley goal made a series of good saves to earn his side a draw, 0-0.

Game 2 V Boston Utd was another tight competitive match between old rivals. Goal machine Steve Bones gave Strollers the lead finding the far corner of the Boston net with a smart finish following a flowing move. Boston pressed hard for an equaliser and following a DOGSO challenge on the edge of the Stamford area they equalised from the penalty spot. Further punishment for the challenge followed in the form of a blue card. Despite being down to 5 Strollers hung on for a 1-1 draw.

Game 3 V Norwich Soca Seniors, another tough game against Norwich SS who had knocked Strollers out of the WFA Cup the previous season 1-0. Following a pretty even match Norwich managed to find a winner from a clever free – kick routine, L 0-1.

Game 4 V Pilgrims, Strollers dominated this one but struggled to create many clear-cut chances, the chances they did create were all dealt with superbly by the Pilgrims keeper who earned his side a 0-0 draw with a man of the match performance.

Game 5 V Sleaford Academicals, Strollers went into this one knowing a win was needed to have any chance of finishing in the top 4. Stamford enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in this one and Bones grabbed the goal to give Strollers their first win of the day, W1-0.

Game 6 V Norwich City, again Strollers knew only a win would do to progress to the semis. In a feisty encounter it was Bones again who scored the goal, direct from a corner! to give Stamford a 1-0 win to make the last four, knocking Yaxley out in the progress.

Game7 Semi-final V Boston Utd A really tight, competitive match between 2 well organised teams ended 0-0. Boston progressed to the final on penalties L 3-2 (Bones, Alan Cook scoring for Strollers).

Overall a good day for Strollers 60s, always looking to create chances whilst at the same time difficult to score against, (7 games, 2 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats, 3 goals for, 2 goals against).
