Sunday July 5 Over 60s FA Cup Local Round @ Cherry Willingham
The Over 60s squad for the FA Cup was:
Dave Moore GK
Taff Lovesey
Alan Cook
Steve Kelly
Paul Humphries
Steve Bones
Tim Marsden Cap
The format for the day was a 5 team round robin with the winners moving forward to the Regional Round.
Game 1 V Lincoln Invictus, Strollers dominated this game but didn’t create any clear-cut chances. Lincoln defended deep and caught Stamford on the break with their only shot on target. Lost 0-1
Game 2 V Grimsby Corinthians, a tight competitive affair looked on track for a no score draw until the referee spotted a Corinthian in the area and pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped top scorer Steve Bones to smash home the resultant kick. Won 1-0
Game 3 V Sleaford Academicals, a pretty even game with few goal scoring opportunities, although Stamford were in debt to Dave Moore for 1 point blank save. Stroller lost Taff Lovesey for the rest of the day to a shoulder injury in this one after a heavy fall. Draw 0-0
Game 4 V Grimsby Ancient Mariners, Strollers had to win this by at least a 2 goal margin to have a realistic chance of finishing top of the table. Playing their best football of the day Stamford created the chances and Bones tucked 2 away to take his tally to 46 goals for the 60s and 65s season 25/26. Won 2-0. In the same period the 60s and 65s enjoyed 64 clean sheets.
In the end it wasn’t enough with Grimsby Corinthians topping the table with 9 points, Stamford finished with 7 points in second place.
Overall not a bad day for the Strollers, although not at their best, played 4, won 2, drew 1, lost 1, goals for 3, goals against 1.
