WFA National Cup Round 1 50+

WFA National Cup Round 1

Stamford Strollers 3 v 2 Long Bennington

———————————————-

A warmer than expected morning greeted both teams as they took the field for this first round tie.

A tight game ensued in a very competitive match, which at times stretched the WFA rules of non-contact and even the FA rules of 'minimal contact'.

As the game moved on though, Strollers gained a little more control of proceedings and started to move Long Bennington around the park with a combination of some impressive interchange and movement of players coupled with quick and accurate passing.

By the time the first period was over that combination saw Strollers go in at the half with a two goal advantage, courtesy of a brace from Lee Tillen.

The second half continued to be a competitive affair and the Strollers were knocked out of their stride by the Long Bennington team who came back into the game and by the midway point of the second half the score was level at 2-2. In addition Strollers had been denied further services of Lee Tillen through injury after a heavy tackle.

Lee’s disappointment at having to be removed from proceedings will have been eased somewhat I am sure by the spectacular “solo effort” goal from Stroller’s Paul Kirby with minutes to go which ultimately sealed the win for Stamford.

A tough, uncompromising hard fought first round tie which Strollers did well to come out on top in.

Congratulations to all concerned. Upwards and onwards to round 2!

Squad for the tie:
