WFA National Cup Round 1 65+

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

A game that got away from our 65+ squad with Oakham triumphing in a penalty shoot out!

The day didn’t start well when striker Gerry Monaghan had to pull out as he needed to self isolate due to a cvid positive test in his family. Our best wishes go to both Gerry and his family with hopes of a speedy recovery.

To the game itself — Frank Smith hit the post after just 2 minutes but in a 1st half edged by Stamford it was Oakham who took the lead with a long range shot into the corner. HT 0-1.

The second half saw Stamford completely on top and Frank Smith scored a deserved equaliser after 30 minutes. Despite creating several great chances and Brian Dunkerley hitting the bar the winner wouldn’t come. FT 1-1.

Extra time again saw Stamford on top against a tiring Oakham team but the Strollers couldn't find the net. 1-1 AET

Unfortunately for our guys, Oakham won the best of 3 shoot out 2-0 to go through to the next round, taking swift revenge following the recent top of the table league defeat.

The game was played in a good spirit and we wish Oakham well in Round 2.
