Stamford met Bramcote in the semi final of the Asha Healthcare Midlands Over 65s Cup and after being held to draws in their last 2 meetings, which ultimately cost the league title, were keen to make amends in the Cup. The game didn’t start well with Bramcote scoring an early goal with a long range effort into the bottom corner.
Strollers soon got into their stride though and 2 good strikes from Gerry Monaghan saw us go in 2-1 up at HT.
An early 2nd half goal from David Kelby looked to make the game safe but Bramcote struck back with a deflected shot.3-2. Strollers quickly rallied and 2 goals from David Kelby and Nic Poletti gave Strollers a deserved 5-2 win and a place in the Final.
The Final saw a tight 1st half with Champions Matlock keen to do the double but no breakthrough and 0-0 at HT. A quick free kick saw Nic Poletti open the scoring early in the 2nd half.1-0. Strollers looked comfortable but with 2 minutes to go Matlock hit back to equalise and send the game into extra time.
Matlock went a man down after a blue card offence and Strollers took full advantage scoring although it came from a bizarre own goal by the Matlock keeper. Nic Poletti soon added a 3rd goal to give Strollers a 3-1 win and the Cup!
