Strollers pipped to top spot by one point

Over 60s Lincs League Match day 5

The Strollers squad for MD5 at the Roses Sports Ground Gainsborough was:

Dave Moore

Paul Humphries

Steve Bones

Jez Norris

Iain Ross

Alan Cook

Taff Lovesey

Tim Marsden Cap

MD5 was the final match day of the season and with 3 games to play Strollers needed 3 wins to claim top the League title.

Game 1 V Grimsby Corinthians Lost 0-1

With Grimsby still in with a shout of runners up in the League a tough game was expected, and so it turned out. Despite Strollers having the majority of possession and chances it was Corinthians who capitalised on a misplaced pass deep in the Strollers half to take an early lead. Strollers pushed hard for an equaliser and Steve Bones hit the woodwork at least twice, but Grimsby held on to claim a hard fought victory.

Game 2 V Grimsby Ancient Mariners Won 3-0

Strollers now needed 2 wins to be sure of runners up. Again, Strollers bossed possession and created numerous chances. Alan Cook converted the first, shooting powerfully into the roof of the net, assisted by a Taff Lovesey free kick. Next Bones took full advantage of a GAM free kick that went wrong to walk half the length of the pitch and finish clinically past the exposed keeper. For the third a flowing move ended with Cook crossing to the far post for Jez Norris to confidently finish.

Game 3 V Lincoln Invictus Won 2-1

Strollers again enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but again were caught out in their own half for Lincoln to grab the lead against the run of play. Second half Strollers regrouped and Bones grabbed 2 goals to ensure Strollers finished runners up in the League.

Overall, a good season for Stamford Strollers with 7 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats, finishing just 1 point behind League Champions Boston.

The squad enjoying a well deserved social drink post match.
