Strollers Over 60s MD1 Lincs League
Strollers made the long journey up to Cleefields Grimsby with a strong squad, however, due to holidays and work commitments, they travelled without a recognised goalkeeper.
The squad for MD1 was:
Iain Ross
Jimmy Watson
Jez Norris
Paul Humphries
Steve Bones
Alan Cook
Manager Tim Marsden & Captain Taff Lovesey shared the goal keeping duties.
Game 1 V Grimsby Ancient Mariners W2-0
Stamford dominated possession against GAM creating a series of chances which the opposition goalie did well to cope with to keep the game scoreless at half time. Second half Strollers continued to create chances with Iain Ross capitalising to give Stamford the lead latching onto a through pass from Alan Cook to finish clinically into the far corner of the net. At 1 – 0 down and struggling to contain a rampant Strollers attack a GAM defender encroached into his own area, conceding a penalty. Jez Norris stepped up to confidently bury the penalty and give Stamford a 2 – 0 win.
Game 2 V Lincoln Invictus W1-0
Once again Strollers enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and created a number of first half chances which the Lincoln keeper did well to keep out. At the other end Lincoln carried a threat going forward and managed to get a dipping volley on target which Tim Marsden, in the Strollers goal, did well to parry. In an end to end second half Taff Lovesey, now in the Stamford goal, saved a penalty (for 4 Stamford running offences), and Ross played in Paul Humphries, on a quick breakaway, who rifled home to give Strollers a 1 – 0 win.
Game 3 V Skegness Town W2-1
Stamford’s toughest game of the day became even tougher when Skegness were awarded a penalty (for 4 Strollers running offences), and converted it to take a 1 – 0 lead into the half time break. Second half Stamford raised their game and Ross intercepted a clearance from the Skegness keeper and finished with ease from close range to bring the scores level at 1 – 1. Despite going a man down when Ross received a blue card, for dissent, Strollers maintained their composure and grabbed a late winner when Steve Bones coolly converted a penalty (for 4 Skegness running offences) to give Stamford a 2 – 1 win.
Overall a v good day for Strollers 60s, 3 wins, 5 goals scored, 1 conceded from a pen, 9 points, 8 + walking offences, 1 blue card, a 170 mile road trip, and beer and curry at The Coliseum Picture Theatre Cleethorpes.
