Mansfield Tournament 23rd Oct 2019 - report by Gary Wildsmith
The tournament consisted of a 4 team league with the teams playing each other twice. Matches were 12 minutes straight.
Games were in the following order
Unity, Chesterfield, Mansfield (and repeated)
The early half of the fixtures gave us the benefit of a rest ‘match’ in between each game.
V Unity
We started off quite slow with a Gary Wildsmith goal giving us the lead. A late well taken goal from Unity made us rue the missed Tim Marsden penalty. The game ended 1-1 in a fairly even affair.
V Chesterfield
This game saw us start much stronger and we proved too strong for the Chesterfield team who had just played back to back matches. The final score was 5-0 with 3 goals from Wildsmith and one each for Colin Barrett-Treen and Paul Beard.
V Mansfield
The team had gelled well by the third game and ran out worthy 3-0 winners. 2 goal for Gary Wildsmith and 1 for Colin Barrett-Treen
This meant at the half way stage we were level on points with Unity but 3 goals to the good.
After a short break we played Unity again. Another tight affair followed with the teams separated by a superb long range effort that found the top corner. We were unlucky to lose 1-0.
We were on straight away again against Chesterfield. We picked ourselves up quickly and a hat trick from Colin Barrett-Treen saw us run out comfortable winners 3-0.
Our last game was against Mansfield but Unity had already won the league with 13 points. We played out a goalless draw to leave us in second place with 11 points.
Well done to all those involved who gave up their day to leave their homes before 8am for what started out a cold and misty day in Mansfield. The football was played in the right spirit, the tournament was well organised and well refereed.
Squad:
Back row: Colin Barrett-Treen, Paul Beard, Paul Archer,
Front row: Gary Wildsmith (capt), Tim Marsden, Trevor Oliver (gk), Brian Dunkerley
