LFA 60+ Championship Matchday 2

Another matchday where the squad came away with no points, but a  much better team performance than in the first outing at Grimsby in November.

Strollers 1:2 Sleaford

A tight game with both team s creating chances but finding the keeper on top. Peter Beyer thought he had opened the scoring only to be pulled back for running, but just a few minutes later Phil Hall put our Strollers one up. Peter Oppenheimer was now called into action multiple times, but a deflected shot on the stroke of half time, totally wrong footed him and Sleaford equalised. The second half continued in a similar fashion, but the game was decided when our poor discipline with regards running, resulted in four infringements and a penalty award. Sleaford took their opportunity and finished the game as 2-1 victors.

Strollers 0:1 Lincoln Invictus

A lacklustre first half, and poor communication at the back, resulting in their striker being wide open in front of goal, meant we went in at the break a goal down. A team discussion at halftime and a few adjustments had us back in the game and the squad created several chances to equalise. The Lincoln keeper was not to be beaten and their squad defended well to take the three points.

Strollers 1:4 Grimsby

A game where the result did not reflect the game as the match was a closer one than this may indicate. Poor discipline, and another penalty for four runs hit us hard again, coupled with some bad luck when Peter Oppenheimer’s momentum took him out of his area, A penalty was awarded when the ball struck him when he was in that position. Add these to an early Grimsby strike for the opener resuled in is falling three goals behind, in what had been a close game, up to that point. Colin Barrett pulled one back for us from the penalty spot before a break away by Grimsby, as we pushed to recover the deficit, saw a skilful little chip over our keeper to put the game beyond us.

In summary, watching from the bench, the lads didn’t get the rub of the green and deserved to come away with a few points for their effort and passing. However, we seriously need to review our play with regards movement, ‘running’ penalties killed us and we need to focus on reducing these and staying within the rules as determined by the referee on the pitch.

Squad:

  • Peter Oppenheimer

  • John Phythian

  • Colin Barrett

  • Paul Humphries
