Thursday October 9 Match day 2, of 6, gave Stamford 7 X 12 minute games against each of the other teams in the Derbyshire Walking Football League.
The squad for the day was:
Kevin Chadwick GK
John Hutchins
Steve Bones
Taff Lovesey
Paul Humphries
Jez Norris
Tim Marsden Cap
A strong squad, buoyed by Paul Humphries first appearance of the season, produced some fine attacking football throughout the 84 minutes of football. The results were as follows:
Strollers 1 Boston Utd 1, in a very even game Boston took the lead following the interception of a loose pass in the Stamford midfield. Unperturbed, Strollers persisted with their positive passing game and a flowing move found Paul Humphries in space who confidently drove the ball into the far corner of the net, giving the Boston keeper little chance.
Strollers 1 Ashbourne 2, despite controlling the game for long spells Stamford were punished on the break by 2 fine finishes from the Ashbourne ‘number 9’ who bent his first goal around his marker and in off the post, for his second he turned his marker and slotted into the far corner. Undeterred Strollers forced Ashbourne back and a flowing move ended with Steve Bones smashing the ball clinically past the Ashbourne keeper. Although Stamford pressed hard they couldn’t find an equaliser against a resolute and physical Ashbourne.
Strollers 2 Matlock 0, Stamford controlled this game from start to finish, but it took a real poachers’ finish from Jez Norris to grab the lead. Humphries scored a second for Strollers despite committed defending from Matlock.
Strollers 0 Derby County 0, a second clean sheet of the day for the excellent Kevin Chadwick in a game which Stamford dominated and should really have won.
Strollers 1 Etwall 0, for the second consecutive month Stamford deservedly won this game 1 - 0 with Humphries grabbing his third of the day.
Strollers 3 Heanor 0, another game with Stamford in command, Bones 2 and Humphries 1 expertly converting their chances, plus a fourth clean sheet for Chadwick.
Strollers 5 Hucknall 1, the last game of the day saw an end to end clash with Hucknall who had a penalty saved by the excellent Chadwick, and another penalty claim turned down by the ref. Bones and Humphries grabbed 2 goals each and Norris poached another for himself with some excellent finishing.
Overall another very good day for Strollers 65s, 4 wins, 2 draws and a first defeat in 14 games in which everybody played their part, however, special mentions for Paul Humphries 6 goals, Steve Bones 5 goals and Kevin Chadwick’s stand out performances in goal which included a penalty save and a record of 9 clean sheets out of 14.
