Asha Healthcare Midlands Over 65s Matchday 5

Strollers go back to the top!

Today saw the clash of the top 2 with leaders Matlock playing Strollers. Matlock started the day 2 points clear so needed only a draw to make them red hot favourites for the title as they were strongly fancied to win their remaining 3 games. For Strollers it was a must win game to give them a realistic chance to be Champions for the 3rd year running.

Matlock got off to a flier scoring in the 2nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. So a real test for Stamford particularly as they had suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat the last time the sides met.

Gradually Stamford came back into the game but Matlock’s stubborn defence held firm.HT 1-0.

In the second half Strollers started to play something like their best and after 16 minutes David Kelby hit a great strike to equalise.1-1.

It was now all Stamford and with 5 minutes remaining Graham Curry hit a beauty to put Strollers 2-1 up.

Matlock were shaken and Strollers looked to be easing to victory when with only 1 minute left Graham Curry was blue carded.

Could Strollers hold on? The game seemed to go on for about 5 minutes with injury time added but Strollers stood firm to win 2-1 and go back to the top of the table!

The 2nd game saw Stamford face Oakham and Strollers were not going to throw points away in this one! Dominant throughout they ran out comfortable winners. FT 6-0 with Gerry Monaghan scoring 4 Chris Keirl 1 and Will Barrett 1.
