ASHA Healthcare Midlands Over 65s Cup

A bizarre day!

We played the 2 group games in the Cup.

Stamford Strollers 4 Boston & Stamford United 0

A good performance and 4-0 win with goals from Will Barrett(2) Gerry Monaghan and John Hutchins.

Stamford Strollers 2 Alfreton 2

Then Alfreton and again Stamford playing some decent football and leading 2-1 with 2 Gerry Monaghan goals until the very last kick of the game. Then a misplaced pass led to a late challenge and what we thought was a free kick. But the referee awarded a very harsh penalty for denying a goal scoring opportunity. The penalty was taken and appeared to be a goal hitting the back stanchion before going up onto the bar and out. FT 2-2.

But, no, the referee declared it had hit the bar and Stamford had won 2-1.The Alfreton team were incensed and threatened to storm off and not play their 2nd game! The referee declared he would only change the score if Stamford asked him to! All supporters and players were asked if they thought it was a goal. The majority said goal but a number said it hit the bar and a number weren’t sure!

After some deliberation and basically to save the day and the competition we asked the referee to change the score to 2-2!!! Bizarre and a bit of an unsatisfactory end to the day.

The good news was Stamford still topped the group after Alfreton and B&S drew 3-3 so play Boston in next month’s semi final.

The squad was as follows:-

John Hutchins

Graham Curry

Will Barrett

Gerry Monaghan

Bob Wood

Chris Keirl

Tony Fisher (late stand in for Bill Whittle)
