ASHA Health Care Over 60s Midlands League

The squad for the final match day at Nottingham was:

  • Bill Whittle

  • Chris Keirl

  • Paul Beard

  • John Hutchins

  • Taff Lovesey

  • Steve Adcock

  • Tim Marsden

With 2 games remaining Strollers knew only 2 good wins would give them any chance of a top 2 finish.

First up was Hucknall, Strollers were quickly into their stride with Taff Lovesey, playing his first game of this Midlands season, setting up Steve Adcock to finish clinically. A second goal followed soon after, this time Adcock turning provider to set up John Hutchins to finish confidently with his trusty left foot. Next Lovesey once again fed Adcock to put our lads 3-0 up and then got in on the scoring act himself, by wining the ball and rounding the keeper to slot home from the edge of the area. 4 – 0 at the break.

Second half Hucknall fought back and Bill Whittle was forced into making at least one excellent save. However, Hucknall kept up the pressure and were awarded a free kick in a promising position. From the free kick and a couple of deflections Hucknall found the back of the net to make it 4 – 1. With time running out Strollers added a fifth when Lovesey again found the prolific Adcock to make it 5 – 1.

Last match of the season saw Stamford take on local rivals Boston knowing a win would guarantee them the runners up spot. A very tight and even first half saw clear cut chances at a premium until Adcock picked the ball up just inside the Boston half, rounded Boston and England defender Steve Slater and rifled a shot passed England goalkeeper John Sykes 1 – 0 to Strollers at half time.

The second half was equally as tight and with time running out Stamford, although under some pressure, were looking good to do the double over Boston. However, in the final few minutes Tim Marsden received a blue card and 4 minutes in the sin bin. Boston took full advantage of the extra man to force an equaliser to make the final score 1 – 1. As a result Strollers finished the season in third place and just missed out on the runners up slot..
