This year Lincs FA have created a Premier League which has the Top clubs in it including Strollers - so no easy games for us!
Today's Match day squad was: Vic Handley GK (Standing in for Bill Whittle), Chris Keirl, Paul Beard (c), Will Barrett, Glyn WIlliams, Steve Adcock & Tim Marsden. (Glyn 'The Slipper' Williams has flown back from the Caribbean to play and show off his tan!).
3 games today. First up:
Stamford Strollers v Boston.
Another cagey game between our mates from Boston. Stamford had a few shots well saved during the first half and possibly edged it. In the 2nd half the game opened up. An interception by Paul who then struck a rising shot that hit the post/crossbar of the Boston goal. Boston had a shot that was dealt with well by Vic in goals for Stamford. Both teams defended well throughout with only the odd half chance. Drew 0-0.
Stamford Strollers v Grimsby Ancient Mariners Glover.
This proved to be a very different game from the opener, with both teams finding space and looking at opportunities to hit the net. Eventually Strollers found some space and a pass from Paul to Steve, who turned the defender and Steve's shot smartly found the corner. 1-0 at half time to Stamford. In the 2nd half Grimsby AMG made a strong start, a good defensive interception by Strollers (judged to have strayed inside the box) resulted in a penalty that was superbly saved by Vic - nothing was getting past Vic in this game. A quick break by Strollers, pass from Glyn to Steve and he grabbed a brace! Strollers managed the game out.
Strollers win 2-0.
Stamford Strollers v Grimsby Corinthians Red.
The final game was against one of the favourites in the Premier League. An end to end game with both teams creating chances but no one able to get a clear shot on goal. Both Gk's were performing well and at half time 0-0. In the 2nd half Steve turned his defender and from an acute angle found the net 1-0 Strollers. Grimsby were applying pressure and Strollers were having to defend well, whilst creating chances upfront. A layoff and Will hit a cracking shot that hit the bar. We then moved in to the final minute an error by Paul (defending on the edge of the penalty area) saw Grimsby nip in and shoot past our keeper. No time to find the winner.
Drew 1-1.
Many thanks to Vic Handley, who produced some great saves and a Penalty save in the 2nd game to keep 2 clean sheets. A top man and even better GK!
Overall, not a bad a day at the office for Strollers, a bit frustrating - but that's football!
Thanks to Boston, Grimsby Ancient Mariners & Grimsby Corinthians Red for some great football today.
