70+ Team Narrowly Miss Out on Silverware

A combined Stamford and Boston United team played in the WFA National 70+ Tournament in Nottingham on Sunday 21st October and finished a hard earned and respectable 3rd place, seeing off teams from larger cities such as Birmingham, Eastleigh, Sheffield and Wales.

A tremendous effort playing in the inaugural WFA National Tournament for this age group at Arnold, Nottingham resulted in an excellent 3rd place finish amongst the eight finalists.

Under the guidance of joint management team Taff Lovesey and Dave Scotney the squad of Danny Tempest (eligible as a 60+ gk), Ian Cooke(Capt), Bob Lear, Brian Keates, Mick Goddard, David Norton, Mel Gardner and Geoff Ward posted the following results:-

Group 2 Matches:-

v.Bramcote L 0-1

v.Wales W 1-0(Bob Lear)

v.Weston-Super-Mare/Desborough D 0-0

v.Portsmouth L 0-2

3rd/4th Play-Off:-

v.Sheffield United D 0-0,Won 3-1 on pens(Geoff Ward,Bob Lear and Ian Cooke).

A great penalty save by Danny Tempest swung the shootout our way and our three penalty-takers put away some clinical spot-kicks to clinch a superb 3rd-place finish and worthy reward for our lads' efforts.

A brilliant afternoon of football, played in a great spirit and reffed expertly by the two WFA-Affiliated Referees.

Many thanks to The WFA for organising an excellent event and well done to all who took part.

Congratulations to Portsmouth on winning the Final on pens after a stalemate v Bramcote (Nottingham)

A final big thanks also to James Malkin of JEM Building & Construction the new Boston United kit sponsor who made the trip over to support the lads and see them looking resplendent in their new kit.
