PDFL Matchday Div 2

Sunday April 23 PDFL Matchday Div 2

With 2 games to play on the final day of the season Strollers B could finish in any of the top 4 places. As Stuart Gardner was on his holidays Paul Newiss came into the squad. The full squad was:

  • Paul Newiss

  • Iain Ross

  • Paul Archer

  • Les Woods

  • Mike Edwards

  • Tim Marsden

First up for Strollers were Whittlesey, very much the form team of the second half of the season and boasting a striker with 26 goals to his name. Stamford got off to a good start when an excellent long pass from Iain Ross found Tim Marsden in space who turned his man and steered the ball into the far corner with his second touch. Whittlesey responded well and Paul Newiss had to be at his best to keep it 1 – 0 to Strollers at half time. Second half Whittlesey piled on the pressure with Whittlesey danger man James Edey left holding his head in his hands as Newiss pulled off a string of fine saves to keep a clean sheet and give Stamford a 1 – 0 victory, which assured them a third place finish at worst.

Next up were Netherton B who had also won their first match of the day and who were now top of the league following Glinton and Northborough’s defeat. If Strollers could win this one they could win the league. However, Netherton had bolstered their B team with a number of their A team players including top scorer Steve Ball. By half time Ball had scored 6 despite the best efforts of the Stamford lads and it must be said the heroic efforts of Newiss in the Stroller’s goal. Netherton rested Ball at half time and a much more even affair resulted second half. Final score 7 – 0 to Netherton, which meant Strollers B finished third out of 10 teams with a record of 11 wins 2 draws and 5 defeats. So overall a good season for the second string. In addition to the squad above the following players represented the B team over the season. Thanks to all for their effort, commitment and cooperation.

  • Paul Giffen

  • Frank Smith

  • Colin Barrett-Treen

  • Stuart Gardner

  • Phil Hall
