MD1 saw Strollers 65s play their first fixtures in the Watch League. Games were played to WFA rules and were 20 mins each way.

Strollers squad for the day was:

• John Knight GK

• Jimmy Watson

• Paul Humphries

• Taff Lovesey

• Alan Cook

• Jez Norris

• Steve Bones

• Tim Marsden Cap

12.00 Strollers 2 Nottingham Reds 3

Strollers faced a strong Notts Reds team who took their chances well through Mark Jones and ex Stroller Steve Alcock to lead 2 – 0 at half time. Stamford had a number of half chances at the other end but they were well kept out by another ex Stroller Tony Fisher.

Second half Notts Reds added to their tally when, ex Stroller, Dave Kelby found himself unmarked to make it 3. Strollers kept their heads up and continued to press forward and Alan Cook, making his 65s debut, played in Steve Bones who confidently found the back of the net. With Strollers now well on top Notts Red were forced to foul in front of goal. From the resultant free kick Tim Marsden set the ball back for Jimmy Watson to drive the ball into the roof of the net to give the score line a fairer reflection of the game.

13.00 Ingles 1 Strollers 2

Strollers dominated the first half with Paul Humphries, Cook and Watson controlling the midfield and keeping it tight at the back. Following a Watson strike from distance the ball broke to Jez Norris who controlled, with his first touch, and sent a half volley into the roof of the Ingles net, with his second, to give Stamford a 1 – 0 lead at half time.

Second half Strollers continued to dominate but couldn’t add to their lead. With time running out and against the run of play Ingles snatched an equaliser from out of the blue. Not to be denied Stamford grabbed the winner with virtually the last kick of the match when Taff Lovesey set up Watson to drive home his second of the day.

Overall a good day for Strollers in a new League, everybody playing their part in 2 good performances. Special mention for John Knight in goal, confidently making his Stamford debut, who couldn’t have done much more for any of the goals conceded.
