Midlands ASHA 65+ League Matchday 5

Updated: Jul 4

After a poor start to the league games earlier in the season, our 65+ squad finished the year strongly with an excellent string of results in the sun at Derby.

Strollers 1 Matlock 1 (Lovesey)

As usual, this game against high flying Matlock proved to be on the slightly more physical side of walking football. In a close game we edged the chances but fell behind in the first half. Our players didn’t panic though and played some excellent football, eventually resulting in Taff Lovesey latching on to a ball on the right which he finished with a solid shot into the roof of the Matlock net.

Strollers 2 Ingles 0 (Phythian, Lovesey)

We continued to play our patient passing game, interspersed with some slick passing. When a shot was pushed out to the left, both Jez Norris and John Phythian were both found open at the far post and Phythian finished with an accurate shot into the corner.

With Tony Laughton and Tim Marsden looking solid in defence and backed up by some good handling from Colin Murrant, Ingles were struggling to create chances. Strollers then stretched their lead when Lovesey robbed an Ingles defender and sent the keeper the wrong way for 2-0.

Strollers 2 Rutland 0 (Norris, Phythian)

With many expecting Strollers to win this one, Rutland put up a stalwart defence in the first half and deservedly held us level at half time.Strollers took control ion the second half though when a good interchange between Lovesey and Norris resulted in Norris opening the scoring.

Strollers continued to push for more goals and were thwarted several times by the opposition keeper, until Phythian latched onto a through pass and put us 2-0 ahead.

So an excellent finish to the season with 4 wins and a draw. In stark contrast to the first three matchdays where we didn’t bag a single win.
