A great performance from our ladies as they finished runners-up at the BIFC Festival in Barton on Humber.
Strollers 2-0 Lincoln Invictus (Kelby x 2)
A strong start. Caroline Allen pulled off a great save in goal and this was soon followed up with the opener from Merryn Kelby. The score was almost doubled when a great pass from Cath Thirsk put Kelby in again, only for the shot to rebound off the post. However, the second wasn't long coming as Thirsk played a pass to Katy Fowkes who slid in Kelby for her second.
A missed penalty by Lincoln kept the score at 2-0.
Strollers 1-5 Wakefield (Kelby)
The Strollers found a very strong Wakefield team a little too hot to handle as they lost this one to the eventual winners, despite a string of good saves by Allen. Kelby scored a consolation goal after robbing a defender.
Strollers 6-1 Barton (Kelby x4, Thirsk, Fowkes)
Our ladies romped to victory in this match against the hosts. Kelby notched the opening two goals with Fowkes getting the assist to Thirsk for the third. Judith Jagger then set up Kelby for the fourth from 15 yards. A slick move involving Thirsk and Kelby saw Thirsk's shot rebound off the post. Kelby was quickest to react and buried the rebound to make it 5-0.
Strollers continued to push and it was soon 6-0 with Fowkes getting on the scoresheet after a steal. Rosalie Gibbs almost added a seventh before a penalty provided the home team with a consolation goal.
Strollers 3-0 Cleethorpes (Kelby x2, Fowkes)
Next up were opponents riding high in the Lincolnshire FA 40+ league. Strollers were now on a roll though, and it was another opener from some good team play. A corner from Kelby to Thirsk was laid back to Fowkes to score.
Dominating possession, the Strollers had further chances and eventually Fowkes played in Kelby for the second, the same two combining shortly afterward for the third.
Strollers 5-0 Hornchurch (Kelby x 3, Thirsk, Jagger x2)
The day ended on a high with our Stroller ladies sweeping aside Hornchurch.
Kelby opened the game with a well-hit shot from 20 yards before Thirsk stole the ball to make it 2-0. Gibbs came close to adding a third, foiled by the Hornchurch keeper, before Fowkes played in Jagger to stretch the lead.
Strollers were now dominant and pushed further ahead with goals from Kelby for her hat-trick and a second for Jagger.
An excellent day and some great football played by our ladies' team.
