Stamford Strollers 1 Boston 0

Stamford hosted Boston at Borderville this afternoon, in the inaugural game of the friendly Tinsel Cup, which will hopefully be an annual, pre-Christmas event going forward. The Strollers were very up for this game, having had a run of close defeats against Boston over recent months. Stamford were ably represented by Paul Newiss, William Barrett, John Hutchins, Jez Norris, Gary Wildsmith, Lee Tillen, Stephen Gates, Scott Sawers and Colin Barrett-Treen. It was a beautiful day for football, with clear skies and no wind, although the low sun was problematical for the keepers. In fact in many respects, it was a game of two keepers, with only a single goal scored and a string of good saves at both ends.

Stamford started a little on the slow side, but quickly got in to their stride and despite no goals in the first half, were clearly on top, with plenty of attempts on goal, a number of which hit the woodwork. Stamford managed to continue in this vein in to the second half and although Boston did create a couple of good chances, Stamford again were on top and again managed to hit the post and bar on more than one occasion. With no more than a few minutes remaining, Stamford’s pressure paid off with a well taken strike from Gary Wildsmith, finding the back of the net, despite The Boston keeper getting a hand to the ball, giving Stamford a well deserved, if not close, one goal to nil victory.

Thanks go to Boston for making the trip, to Taff Lovesey and Guy Walton for all they do for the club and also to those that turned up to support both teams.
